#TravelTuneTuesday

12398493124_55537c9125_oEvery road trip has a score, and if you’re lucky, a theme song.

On our road trip through Turkey a few years ago, one song kept playing on the radio again and again.

We dubbed this song “Monkeys to Your Room”, and made up our own lyrics, since we couldn’t grasp the Turkish ones.

In the bazaar, we’d find ourselves whistling this tune. One of us would be humming it while we explored the ruins, or tapping out the beat while we sipped our raki. It’s very catchy.

Even today, it comes into our heads in the tempo of our windshield wipers. I had to find it and download it for my playlist.

Do you know how hard it is to find a song in a language you don’t understand when all you have to go on is that it sounds like “all the monkeys to your room”?!?

Dağilmak Istiyorum

I found an English translation here:

I Wanna Fall Apart

Version #1#2

Tonight, ashes of a fairy tale

Flew away from inside me.

Its exhausted hero

Is one rhyme, lonely, you see.

Not long, a little time ago;

A Fairy taile grew inside me.

As you lied everyday,

It quietly died in my heart.

Until my eyes are swollen,

I wanna cry.

Drinkin ’til the morning,

I wanna faint.

Hanging around in the streets,

I wanna scream.

With your excuse, tonight,

I wanna fall apart.

Tonight, ashes of a fairy tale

Flew away from inside me.

Its exhausted hero

Is one rhyme, lonely, you see.

Now, when my music is on shuffle and this song comes on, we are transported to a glorious June day on the road between Goreme and Pamukkale. One of us may be in the midst of doing laundry, but will always pop their head out of their task to sing the line “Monkeys to your room!” and share a smile of reminiscence.

Memories don’t have to live only in photographs.
