Carrot Rewards (Unless you prefer the stick!)

Carrot Rewards

So, by now, you probably know that you can earn loyalty points at many different types of businesses, from airlines to gas stations, and even movie theatres and coffee shops.

Hopefully, you know that the best/quickest way to earn points is by getting sweet sign-up bonuses and double-dipping with co-branded credit cards (AmEx Gold and Platinum points can be transferred 1:1 with Aeroplan).

You may also know that you can earn (and often redeem) these points at places other than the source. You can get More Rewards at Panago, and Aeroplan Miles at Esso. You can get Scene points by shopping at SportChek, and Petropoints when booking travel with itravel2000.com.

But, did you know that you can also earn points in each of these 4 programs without leaving home or even spending a dime? All you need is an app!

Carrot Rewards

Carrot Rewards is an app available via Google play and the iTunes store that gives you points for learning how to make healthy choices in the guise of quick and easy quizzes.

Unlike other points-for-surveys programs, Carrot Rewards are not time or labour intensive. I usually spend less than 2 minutes per quiz, and I don’t think I’ve seen one with more than 10 questions. You don’t need to think hard about your responses or even get the questions right, because it’ll tell you the answers after each question and the goal of the program is to teach you about healthy living and get you thinking about making better lifestyle choices.

Generally, the questions are similar to this:

What is the best choice for a healthy lunch?

A) a bag of potato chips

B) a pepperoni pizza

C) steamed broccoli

Sometimes, I answer wrong just for the fun of it.

It looks like they plan to expand beyond quizzes into activity tracking, recipes, and other motivators in the near future, but you can always choose which offers you want to accept.

Who’s paying for this?

Whenever something comes along that seems too good to be true, you’ve got to ask yourself who is benefiting, and who is paying for it.

In this case, the answer is, you are paying for it through your tax and charitable dollars, and you are benefiting through rewards points and lower health care costs that should come with a healthier populace.

Carrot Rewards partners

The BC government has kicked in $2.5 million, and the Federal government has put in double that, so you might as well reap the rewards you’re paying for. You can read more about the business model in this Financial Post article.

Who can join?

The program started out only being available to those in BC, with big plans to expand. The latest app update says that it is now open to residents of Newfoundland and Labrador, and they are announcing another province on June 14th. All I can say for those in other regions, is that no one has checked my ID to prove where I live.

All you need to do is download the app and register. You can choose which program you want your rewards to go to. BUT, if you really want to hack this program, all I can say is that many people have more than one email address…

*Always read and follow the T’s&C’s.

What can I earn?

Carrot rewards programs

I started with earning Scene points and have so far earned 2280 points (2 free movies is much better than a kick in the pants in exchange for a few minutes of my time while standing in line at Subway). A new offer comes out every few days and each one has a different number of points (I think it depends on who is sponsoring each quiz). I found the point value of each quiz has gone down a bit since I first started, but it’s definitely still worth doing.

I tried out Aeroplan, and found that it’s a great way to keep my Aeroplan account active, so that I won’t have to worry about my points expiring since I’ve recently cancelled my TD Aeroplan Visa (churning in progress).

Aside from earning points for signing up and doing quizzes, you can also earn points for referring your friends. (If you’d like to support this blog, use my bonus code: heatherm4933)

Sign-up/Referral Bonus:

Aeroplan: 50

More: 125

Petro-Points: 800

Scene: 100

AND, after all that, if you don’t like the programs you’ve got points in, you can always exchange between your reward programs and convert your credit card points into flight miles.

Bottom Line:

Carrot Rewards is a quick and easy way to earn points in 4 different rewards programs. It may even help you live healthier. If you want to get points just for signing up, go here and use the bonus code: heatherm4933

You may as well, since you’re paying for it, after all.
